Russell completed his medical degree and doctorate of medicine at the University of Melbourne and attained his fellowship in Medical Oncology with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He spent 10 years in clinical academic medicine then over 20 years at CSL Ltd. In his time at CSL, he led clinical trial programs from first-in-man to phase 3 regulatory studies for vaccines and therapeutic medicines, as well as overseeing clinical and safety aspects of regulatory approvals globally.
Russell currently serves as a non-executive director of two listed biotech companies, Starpharma Ltd and Medical Development International, as well as of the Doherty Clinical Trials Unit.
